STUDENT Visa & Health Insurance

Applying for a Student Visa

Interested in exploring further study in Australia? It’s important to know how a student visa in Australia (or Subclass 500 student visa) is prepared. Note that a student visa is the only official endorsement on one’s passport, approved by the Australian government, which allows students to enter Australia as a full-time student.

Getting a student visa can be a simple process if you follow these steps below:

Step 1: Confirm enrollment and prepare for supporting documents

A visa application can’t be made if your Confirmation of Enrollment (COE) or a letter of offer is omitted. It will be furnished by university of choice after a firm acceptance has been processed, or a deposit payment made.

Apart from that, there are a few requirements must be proved: –

1.       Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement (a genuine intention to stay in Australia)

2.       Finance requirement

3.       English proficiency requirement

4.       Health and character requirements (Medical checkout)

Further documents needed? Use Document Checklist tool to make sure all the documents are in good order.  Don’t forget to purchase your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), which is an obligation for all international students. If you would like to understand more about OSHC, click here to find out more!

Step 2: Start your visa application

The visa application is submitted online through ImmiAccount. Students can be inside or outside Australia when the application is processed.

Step 3: Actions after visa application

故事的结局? Definitely not! Schedule a medical checkup and a biometric data collection appointment with the panel clinic (which is available in the Immigration Page) and VFS Global Malaysia, to complete the whole visa application process.

Cost Incurred

The visa application fee is charged at AUD 630*, unless you are exempt. It’s a one-time payment and no further renewal fee applies afterwards.

Don’t forget to prepare a medical checkup fee (which costs about RM 285*) and a Biometric data collection fee (RM 115*), which is required upfront.

*As of 31st July 2022

What to do with a student visa?

While on a student visa, students may work part-time for up to 40 hours per fortnight once the program starts. The visa also allows students to travel outside Australia and return as many times as possible, while this visa is valid.

International students on a temporary student visa must maintain a health cover for the length of their visa while studying in Australia. The cover must start from the date students arrive in Australia, not the day the course starts. Therefore, students are required to purchase Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) and keep their policy up to date.

Generally, the OSHC policy is set out in the OSHC Deed, which is structured by the Department of Health Australia, and explains how OSHC works to the insurer (insurance companies) and the insuree (students). Please note that general treatments such as dental, optical or therapy and traditional medicine are not covered under OSHC.

OSHC includes the cover for: –

  • Doctor visits and treatment
  • Hospital
  • Ambulance
  • Limited pharmaceutical (medicine)

Does OSHC cover Covid-19 related illness?

Yes! If students are diagnosed and certain treatments are required, the OSHC plan can help to ease your medical burden. However, it does not cover either self-quarantine fees or swab test fees before travelling onshore to Australia.

How to arrange OSHC

OSHC is offered by certain insurers, regulated by Department of Health Australia. The providers are as follows: –
1.       Ahm OSHC
2.       Allianz Care Australia (People Care)
3.       BUPA Australia
4.       CBHS International health
5.       Medibank Private
6.       NIB OSHC

Not sure how to arrange your OSHC policy and payment? It can be arranged by an education provider (university of choice) or education agent. Contact us now and we will help to organize an exclusive health cover plan with the best value for you!
